Last week, we installed the big outdoor showcases for two original segments of the Berlin Wall in Brussels.
These two segments can be found besides the visitors’ entrance to the Hemicycle of the European Parliament, a semi-circular debating chamber, where Members of the European Parliament sit to discuss and pass legislation.
The fall of the Berlin Wall was an emblematic moment in European history. A moment that marks the end of an era of division of the continent. After its fall, segments of the wall have been installed in various parts of the world, symbolising the importance of unity over division.
In 2004, one of these original segments of the Berlin Wall was presented to the Brussels public in Leopold Park, after being removed from its original location in Berlin. The second original segment of the Berlin Wall was part of an exhibition organised in the Place du Luxembourg in 2009.
In 2021, the two pieces were relocated to their current place as part of a project to protect them. The segments are covered with graffiti and inscription as a symbol of the commitment to peace, freedom and democracy.
We are proud to be able to help protect these original parts of the Berlin Wall in these specially developed showcases.
